Low: Live at The Troubadour 11/16/2015
My first show ever was seeing Low in 2004. I saw them before seeing my favorite band of my early teens: Green Day. This is why I have a very personal connection with this band, and they have always remained and will always remain among my all-time favorites. I also grown a true reverence for special music such as the music Low creates. Every now and then, there's a band that is tapped into the same spirit and mindset that Low's music comes from, and you can't deny it's something special, almost sacred. Whenever I'm in doubt or in need of comfort, I always go back to Low's records; they have built a foundation for me that has helped me in my life, not just musically. I didn't get to see Low again until about 9 years later, due to circumstances I'm not quite sure why. Since then, I've made sure to catch them every time they come around. Though their newer records may be different than what came about before, there's still something special about them as a group. I also sincerely enjoy every record they put out; maybe some more than others, but I can't say that they don't have one album I don't like. They have almost been stepping stones for me, mile markers throughout my existence where I can look back and say "oh yeah, that's what was going on in my life around the time that record came out/I saw them play." These recordings are when I got to take my then-girlfriend-now-wife Rachel to see them. She doesn't feel the same cult-ish behavior I do about them, but she did enjoy it. This is another case of where I realized partially into the show that I should try to record it. The Troubadour is a nice and intimate venue, we were basically against stage left, and the crowd was a pretty respectful bunch that evening: it seemed like a recipe for a good recording. This was during their Ones and Sixes tour, and many of these songs translated so beautifully in their stripped-down three piece. A very real part of the evening was right before the last night of the song, Murderer, was played, when Alan addressed the audience about what was on his mind regarding the recent attacks that had taken place in Paris at the Eagles of Death Metal concert. It was a very sobering moment that though there are so many people in the world that go to shows and listen to obscure bands like Low, but we are all connected. It made that version of Murderer the more impacting.
Listen, and enjoy one of my favorite bands of all time.
